Times Tables

It is very important that your child knows their times tables off by heart. They should be able to say the answer to a times table question as fast as they can answer what their name is!I recommend that you practise 3 times table questions per night until your child is confident. The next 3 questions can be practised the following night and so on until your child knows them all.

This knowledge is crucial for their maths work this year.

Spellings

Spellings will be given out on a Monday and tested the following Monday. It is important that children use the Look / Cover / Say / Spell / Check method to help them learn their spellings effectively. In addition, spellings can also be practised on the Spelling Shed website, and login details for this can be found in the back of your child’s reading record.

Spelling books should be returned to school every Monday, as the test will take place in the back of the book. This allows you to see which words were spelt correctly and which, if any, were incorrect and need further practise. Please do not allow your child to practise their spellings in their spelling books; this must be completed on a separate piece of paper instead.

Please also refer to the list of Statutory Year 3 and 4 spelling words. These are the words children are expected to know by the end of Year 4, and they will appear in your child’s weekly spelling lists throughout the year.

Reading

All children will bring a reading book home with them each night. Please take time to read a little with your child EVERY night. Reading with them each night will make a huge difference to their progress.

When you are reading with your child, please encourage them to discuss the book too. For example:

  • What has happened?
  • What might happen next? Why does your child think this?
  • What are the characters thinking and feeling? Why does your child think this?

When your child answers a question, please ask them to SHOW you where they got the answer from in the text – ask them to PROVE IT.

Also, please make sure that your child understands the meaning of the words they are reading. Encourage your child to ask the meanings of any unfamiliar words or to look them up in a dictionary (if your child does not have a dictionary then perhaps this could be a birthday, Christmas or Eid present!).

Please write a comment in your child’s Reading Record book every time you hear them read, as this feedback from you is very helpful and always appreciated.

Homework

English or Maths homework will be given out on a Friday and must be handed in the following Wednesday. It is important that parents and carers support children with their homework and ensure they have a quiet place to work so they can concentrate.

Please remember to sign your child’s homework sheets or book to show that you have checked the work together. Homework should always be neat and well presented, as untidy work will need to be repeated.

At times, homework may be set on Seesaw or Purple Mash. Login details for all online work can be found stuck into the back of your child’s reading record.

Stone Age Day!

We became archaeologists for the day! We explored weapons, tools and clothing across the periods. There was plenty of time discovering new information and piecing together parts of history, especially in the discovery of metal! In the afternoon, we had a smelly task of exploring Stone Age poo! We were able to determine different diets and what was available to them in that period
